Genealogical Brick Wall
Solomon M. Gaines (1833 - 1909) & Elvira E. Hill (1835 - 1896)
Information I have:
- Solomon was born 7 August 1833 in either Ohio or Connecticut. Most census enumerations indicate he was born in Ohio. In the 1840 census, Calvin Gaines is in Granby, Hartford, Connecticut.
- Believe Solomon's parents are Calvin Gaines and Polly Booth; his death certificate supports this. I have seen sources that indicate he may have been the son of Solomon Gaines and Nancy Goddard but I believe this to be inaccurate as Granby, Connecticut cemetery Inscriptions show that Solomon M. Gaines, son of Solomon Gaines and Nancy Goddard, died 17 Jan 1833 at the age of 1 year, 10 months.
- Elvira was born 3 Oct 1835 to Daniel Converse Hill and Lydia Almira Long.
- Solomon appears in the household of Calvin and Polly Gaines in Madison, Lake, Ohio in the 1850 census.
- Married Elvira E. Hill on 24 Jan 1855 in Lake County, Ohio.
- Elvira and their children appear with her parents in Thompson, Geauga, Ohio in the 1860 census.
- He appears in Madison, Lake, Ohio in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census enumerations.
- Elvira died 16 Nov 1896.
- According to two articles in the 3 August 1909 edition of the Painesville Telegraph-Republican, he died 28 July 1909 in Ravenna, Portage, Ohio or 29 July 1909 in Edinburgh, Portage, Ohio. He was buried in the "Madison Cemetery" on 31 July 1909. I suspect he was buried either in the Fairview or North Madsion cemetery although he does not appear in cemetery transcriptions.
Information I'm seeking:
- Dates and locations of birth, death, and burial for both Solomon and Elvira.
- In 1850 and subsequent census records that he appears in, he lists Ohio as his place of birth.
- Daughter, Floretta (Gaines) Hill resided in Edinburgh but information I have shows she died in March 1909.
- Which cemetery in Madison contains his grave? There are Gaines buried in the Fairview and North Madison cemeteries. Neither Solomon nor Elvira appear in Lake County tombstone inscription lists.
- Possible links to Gaines families of Granby and Enfield, Connecticut.
